WHAT TO EXPECT
If this is your first experience bonefishing in the Bahamas, we'd like to provide a little information of things that you can expect while on the island.
-
You can expect that all of your cares to go away as soon as you arrive on Exuma.
- Taxi service is always available at the airport. There is a car rental located at the airport as well.
-
There are markets in George Town where you'll be able to find all the basic supplies that you need for your stay at these stores. Liquor stores are open until 5 p.m. They closed on Sundays.
-
You can expect most places to require cash or credit cards. Checks can take up to 10 weeks to clear in Exuma so they are not accepted. There's an ATM downtown at the bank.
- Some accommodations don't have televisions or telephones in your room. You're here to get away from it all, right? If you feel that these things are a necessity to you, please confirm that they're available to you when you book your accommodations.
-
You can expect the guide to pick you up at your accommodations at 8 a.m. and drive you to his boat. Please try not to get upset if the guides are a few minutes late. You're now on island time. It's not a standard but not uncommon for the guides to be about 10 minutes late. Give yourself a few days and you'll be on island time too. Before long, YOU may be the one who's running late.

If
you're staying at a distant location from the flats, you can expect to need transportation to get to our guides. If you do not have a rental car, we'll be happy to arrange for taxi transportation for you. If this is the case, you can expect Dudley, Taxi 35, to pick you up at 07:30 on the days that you fish. He will take you to the guides for your day of fishing. We apologize for this extra expense but please know that our guides have kept their rates low to help accommodate this added expense.
-
The guides will take you to their boat. You should rig up your rods while the guide is preparing the boat. You don't want to be rigging up after the guide stops the boat and immediately sees a school of bonefish heading your way! Be prepared in advance.
-
If the tides are high, you can expect to fish from the boat to fish the creeks and mangrove shorelines. At this time, you will want a heavier fly on so that it will get down to the bonefish.
-
While fishing from the boat you can expect the guides to use the 'clock system' to point out where the fish are located. Directly in front of the boat is considered as 12 o'clock. Just to the left is 11 o'clock and just to the right is 1 o'clock, etc.
-
While wading the flats, you may encounter hard bottom flats that are easily waded. However some of the bonefish flats consist of soft bottom and are bumpy. If you're not able to wade these types of flats, please let us or the guides know so that they can better suite your requirements.

Finally, be prepared for the unexpected . . . like this blue nose seven pound fish from the north side of Exuma.
We've sent this photo to bonefish research centers and they verify that they have never seen a blue-nose bonefish like this before.
